Paro
With the only international airport in the country, Paro Valley serves as the gateway to the Kingdom of Bhutan and the main entry point for travellers flying into the country. Stunning vistas of rice paddy fields and charming traditional Bhutanese houses can be glimpsed by those fortunate enough to fly into Bhutan.
On the banks of the river lies Paro town, which resembles a western settlement from the old American frontier, with its main road passing through rows of shops. The storefronts are painted in the traditional Bhutanese style. A leisurely walk along the streets of Paro takes you past charming cafés and handicraft stores offering locally made souvenirs.
Paro Valley is home to numerous temples and monasteries, including the ancient Kyichu Temple and the iconic Taktshang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery. The highlight of any visit is a hike to Tiger’s Nest, drawing faithful devotees, nature lovers, hikers, and curious souls alike.
The Paro Dzong (fortress) overlooks the valley like a watchful sentinel, its imposing stone walls visible from across the valley. Above the Dzong stands Ta Dzong, the former watchtower that now houses the National Museum of Bhutan. Visitors can explore Bhutan’s rich history and culture through ancient artefacts, royal memorabilia, traditional costumes, religious art, thangkas, weapons, stamps, jewellery, and natural-history exhibits.
